SPATIAL SEGREGATION TO ENHANCE PASSENGERS’ COMFORT AND SECURITY

SPATIAL SEGREGATION TO ENHANCE PASSENGERS COMFORT AND SECURITY

ABSTRACT

Transportation is a requirement for every nation, regardless of its industrial capacity, population size, or technological development John, 1989. He further opined that buses for public transportation have made more striking progress in recent years than any other invention.

Faulks, 1997 opined that the most important determinant of user satisfaction with a transit station is reliable service in an environment of personal security. This brings about the need to provide a bus terminal with a high sense of personal security and comfort within the facility. This is necessary as Awka which is a state capital cant boast of a standard bus terminal where travelling passengers can come and have a sense of personal security and comfort before and after their journey. The project will be executed through the collection and collation of information and/or data from; Literature reviews, Case Studies, Interviews and internet sources.

The main essence of the design is to provide a bus terminal which would ensure the security and comfort of passengers before and after their journey. All these I intend to achieve by ensuring effective spatial arrangement through proper zoning of activities. Spatial Segregation To Enhance Passengers Comfort And Security Page 1

CHAPTER ONE

1:00:00. INTRODUCTION

1:01:00. BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Transportation is the vehicular Conveyance of persons, animals or goods from one place to another. Dictionary of architecture and Building Construction, 2008.

This definition is fundamental and holistic but still, certain individuals or groups have tried to define transportation from their own peculiar needs. Transportation has been an essential feature of life, It is categorized first from people walking from one point to another on foot, to running on the backs of domestic animals like horses, the schematic progress from the path to the road, from streams and rivers to oceans, the rail to the sky have widened the mode of transportation. Since the invention of automobile, transportation systems and the routes

they use have greatly influenced both how and where people live Microsoft Encarta 2009. 19932008 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. The System of Automobility by John Urrey Theory, Culture amp; Society, Vol. 21, No. 45, 2539 2004.

Hence the ever increasing need for functional bus terminals. According to Metric Handbook Planning and Design Data second edition, A bus terminal is an area away from the general flow of road vehicles, which enables buses and coaches, to drop and pick up passengers in safety and comfort.

Iseki, H. amp; Brian, D. 2006 are of the opinion that transit travelers expend a great deal of their time, energy, and patience outside of buses, which contributes greatly to both their actual and perceived burden of transit travel. This, in turn, helps to determine travelers decisions whether or not to take that transit company in the future. Accordingly, this research examines ways to increase the security and comfort while reducing the burden of the time spent outside of vehicles during transit trips.

Faulks, 1997 further opined that the most important determinant of user satisfaction with a transit station is reliable service in an environment of personal security, and only indirectly the physical characteristics of that station. David L. 2008 maintains that bus station terminal is an area away from the general flow of road vehicles, which enables buses and coaches, to drop and pick up passengers in a secured and comfortable environment.

This safety and comfort is only assured when there is appropriate zoning in the terminal. ...Get Complete Material.
